Emily was asked to create a self-portrait of her younger self. The squares in her piece represent her uniform and the mask she developed at a young age. The flowers evoke memories of her first doodle. The eyes represent the stares of her classmates, being one of the few POC in class.

Lola Summer represents closeness and comfort; summers with my grandma lola. Working in her garden, and feeling appreciated on the swim team. This was also the first summer I met 2 adopted Korean girls who lived next door to my grandma. For me, the tight, closed forms reflect that grounding energy I experienced - not having to wear my mask to the world.
24” x 36” x 1” acrylic on canvas
At six, Emily began competitive swimming. One summer, she was caught in a rip current at Robert Moses and had to be rescued. This piece reflects the feeling of being pulled under by the waves, and the lesson she learned: surviving the undertow by not fighting it but letting it pass.
40” x 46” 2025 (unstretched, easy to ship roll of canvas)
An internal landscape of what it feels like to be underwater.
The fluid movement, layered strokes, and rippling color reflect the feeling of being underwater: suspended, held, quiet, and fully inside my body again. This painting is for anyone who cherishes the therapy of water, the way it erases sound and slows time.
